Manic Patterns
curated by: Thimo te Duits

Manic Patterns brings together the work of artists and designers in an exhibition with the character of an installation. Both the works themselves and the display are visually dense: an interplay between tranquillity and commotion. Manic Patterns is not about defining or uniting disciplines but rather about how makers with varying preoccupations share a passion for pattern and structure. Repetition, order and the creation of freedom play an underlying role within a pattern. Nothing is more boring than more of the same. Many of the works feature the endless repetition of parts of the motif. It is here that the ‘manic’ of the title resides. Neither the makers nor the viewers can escape this obsessive repetition.
The exhibitors have a shared interest in meticulous work, in which the grand gesture makes way for an eye for detail. ‘Less is more’ is out of the question. The exhibition features wallpapers and textiles, a new area of interest for many designers. But within the classical decorative arts there is still great interest in repeated patterns on vases and dishes. The two-dimensional works in the show exhibit a much freer approach to pattern, incorporating not only forms but also texts.
Carla Kogelman’s photographic portraits of manic-depressive patients, presented on Studio Job’s Labyrinth wallpaper, create moments of rest within the visual clamour.

Participating artists and designers:

Bas van Beek is showing wallpapers and textiles that are abrasive re-workings of Wiener Werkstätte and Bauhaus patterns and Jan Schoonhoven’s repetitive drawings.
Carla Kogelman has been commissioned by a mental healthcare organisation in Amsterdam to make portraits of patients with manic depression, two of which are featured in the exhibition.
Wilma Kuil works exclusively with textiles. By cutting into a stack of patterned fabrics, she conjures up images inspired by Dutch still lifes.
Wietske van Leeuwen stacks ceramic casts of fruits to create strange dishes and vases.
Barbara Nanning makes lobed glass object that are meticulously decorated with patterns made from glass rods.
Kim van Norren paints disturbing words on busy backgrounds. One of her works in the exhibition features the repeated word ‘error’. The English word for ‘mistake’ comes from the Latin word for ‘wandering’.
Bertjan Pot is a successful designer, who has recently worked extensively with textiles. His exhibits include a folding screen and disturbing objects made from coiled thread such as a naked man haemorrhaging blood.
Gerco de Ruijter takes aerial photographs of the earth in search of unpredictable patterns and rhythms.
Robin Speijer, a recent graduate, has already made a name for herself with her detailed paintings of draped fabrics.
Sebastiaan Straatsma uses injected epoxy resin to make monumental lidded vases with terrifying motifs and texts.
Studio Job have established an international reputation for their obsessively decorative designs. The exhibition features their Labyrinth wallpaper.
